How to Play a Flag Country Quiz

The basic flag quiz is simple: one person shows a flag, everyone else names the country. From there, pick a format that suits your group.

Four friends at a table looking at a grid of flags on a tablet
  • Flag to country. See a flag and name the nation. Make it easy with four multiple-choice options, medium with a first-letter hint, or hard by typing the name.
  • Country to flag. Turn it around: you get the name, then choose the right flag out of four similar ones.
  • Matching. Five country names on one side, five flags on the other; match the pairs against a timer.
  • Coloring. Pick the right colors for a country’s flag. Remembering the colors is easy; putting them in the right order is a different game.
  • The whole grid. One timer for a full region: type as many of its flags as you can before time is up.
  • Random flag. Spin a wheel or draw a random country, then guess its flag or name. In elimination mode a flag drawn once does not come back, so you work through the whole list.
  • Name it and place it. For a classroom, add an extension task: write the continent next to each country.
  • Daily challenge. Everyone gets the same ten flags today and compares a grid of green and red squares.

Scoring ideas

  • Give each player three tries per flag, with fewer points for each extra guess.
  • Play 15 rounds of 20 seconds, and score faster correct answers higher.
  • Track streaks: a wrong answer resets the streak, so steady correct answers beat rushed guesses.
  • For a timed game, add a 10-second penalty for each wrong match.

A flag quiz works for a small group at home, over Zoom, or in a classroom where students vote from their own phones. Start with a short round on one continent, then try the full world flags quiz. For more ideas for a video call, see our quiz games for Zoom.

European Flag Quiz

No continent squeezes so many flags into so little land, and plenty of them are just three stripes shuffled into a new order. Grouping them helps.

  • The Nordic crosses. Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland all use the same cross, set toward the pole side. Only the colors change.
  • The Slavic tricolors. White, blue and red show up on Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia and Croatia. Check the top stripe first, then whether there is a coat of arms and what it shows.
  • The near-twins. Pairs that decide tight games: Romania and Chad; Monaco, Indonesia and an upside-down Poland; Ireland and Italy; the Netherlands and Luxembourg, told apart only by how dark the blue is.
  • Emblems to hang on to. Albania has the double-headed eagle, Greece the cross, Wales (part of the UK) the red dragon, Türkiye the star and crescent.
  • Go region by region. Take the Balkans one day, the Nordics or the Baltics the next, instead of the whole continent in one sitting.

African Flag Quiz

Africa has 54 UN member states: 17 in Eastern Africa, 16 in Western Africa, 10 in Middle Africa, 6 in Northern Africa and 5 in Southern Africa. Most mistakes happen inside the groups below.

  • Green, yellow and red. Many flags use the pan-African colors, so read the band order and the symbol. A black star means Ghana, a green star Senegal, one star on the red band Cameroon. Mali and Guinea both have plain vertical bands, in reverse order to each other.
  • Two Congos. Diagonal green, yellow and red is the Republic of the Congo. Sky blue with a red diagonal and a yellow star is the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • North Africa. Crescents and stars mark Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Egypt is the odd one out with the golden Eagle of Saladin.
  • East Africa. Sudan, South Sudan and some neighbors combine pan-Arab or pan-African colors with a triangle next to the pole. Compare the stripe order, look for a star or an emblem.

How to Learn All Country Flags

Nobody has to learn every flag in the world, but the more you know, the easier it gets. These tricks help.

  • Start with the familiar ones. Learn the G20 countries first, then developed countries on each continent, then popular tourist destinations. In one 236-flag matching quiz, the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany were the most recognized flags, while Bhutan, Eswatini and Kiribati were among the most missed.
  • Repeat. Repetition reinforces memory, so play often. Study with labels first, then practice with hints, then test yourself with none.
  • Master short quizzes first. A continent or a region at a time beats all 193 at once. Leave out countries you already know well and keep the list small while you are learning.
  • Study the patterns. Notice what keeps coming back: the colors, stars, crosses and crescents, coats of arms, the way the stripes run. These details tell similar flags apart, and they often hint at the region or a group of related countries.
  • Practice by color family. Drill sets such as red, white and blue flags; just red and white; blue and white; green, black, red and white; green, yellow, red and black; three plain horizontal stripes; flags with stars; flags with a crescent; flags with the Union flag. Other themed sets: flags of Spanish-speaking countries (21) and the countries taking part in an Olympics or the 2027 Pan Am Games (41).
  • Drill by subregion. Smaller sets are easier to master: Northern Africa (12 flags), Western Africa (18), Eastern Africa (22), Central Africa (9), Southern Africa (5); Western Asia (19), South and Southeast Asia (19), Eastern, Central and Northern Asia (12).
  • Drill the look-alikes. Practice the pairs people mix up: Chad and Romania, Monaco and Poland, Indonesia and Monaco, Ireland and Côte d’Ivoire, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
  • Learn the meanings. Knowing why a flag looks the way it does makes it stick.
  • Use mnemonics. Turn a flag into a picture to remember: Canada’s maple leaf, the unusual shape of Nepal’s flag, Israel’s two blue stripes with the Star of David. A cedar or a dragon also points straight to one country.
  • Review your misses. Look at the flags you got wrong at the end of each game and play those again.

Fun flag facts

  • Flags have existed for millennia and can be traced back to ancient China and India. In Europe they began to take on a national meaning between the Middle Ages (500 to 1500) and the Renaissance.
  • Countries choose colors and symbols that matter to the nation. The red, white and blue of the US flag come from the flag of Great Britain, the country the US was once a colony of.
  • Many Muslim countries, such as Turkey, Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indonesia, use green, black, red and/or white, colors important in Muslim culture.
  • Red is the most common color on flags. Besides the United States, the United Kingdom and France, 26 other countries use red, white and blue.
  • Purple is the rarest color: it appears only on the flags of Nicaragua (in the tiny rainbow in the center) and Dominica (in the central bird).
  • Three horizontal stripes is the most common layout, followed by three vertical stripes.
  • The United States has changed its flag the most times (32), followed by Afghanistan (24) and Venezuela (17).

Flag Quiz Apps and Online Games

Online flag quizzes are free in the browser on a phone, tablet or desktop. The best ones share a few features worth looking for.

  • Several modes: multiple choice, a first-letter hint, typing, two-choice quizzes, speed runs with a streak multiplier, a mixed mode where each spin asks for either a flag or a name, flag riddles and Akinator-style guessing, and a learn mode with every flag and its country facts.
  • Settings you can change: how many rounds you play, how long each one lasts, and how many guesses a player gets.
  • Regional decks: world, UN, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Oceania and US state flags (both ways: name the state from its flag, or pick the flag of a given state), plus quizzes for capitals and country shapes.
  • Answer choices you can set: 2, 4 or 8 options. Smarter quizzes take the wrong options from the same region, so you have to pick Sweden out of other Nordic crosses, not out of Portugal and Japan.
  • Hints and pauses: a hint button with a short cooldown, and a pause that stops the timer.
  • Scores to share: accuracy, total time and longest streak, a daily leaderboard, a score certificate or a results link. In one matching quiz of 236 flags most players finish in 4.9 minutes, and the fastest perfect score took 1.9 minutes.
  • Multiplayer: up to 8 players get the same flag at the same time, and whoever names it correctly first earns the most; for a 1v1, invite one opponent.
  • Real flag images rather than emoji (which Windows shows as letters), and some quizzes keep working offline once the page has loaded.

Flag Quiz FAQ

How many flags are there in the world?

The United Nations has 193 member states, so a standard world flag quiz uses 193 national flags. Some quizzes count 194, some 236, and turning on territories takes one game up to 254 flags.

How many flags are in a regional flag quiz?

It depends on who is counting. European quizzes range from 38 to 46 flags; one uses 48, another 50 (the 45 UN members in Europe plus Türkiye, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan). Africa has 54 UN members, without Western Sahara. Asia has 46 UN members, with Turkey and Georgia but without Cyprus, Russia, Palestine or Taiwan. Oceania has 14 flags and the Americas 35; one site splits the Americas into the Caribbean (30), South America (13) and North and Central America (10).

What is a flag guesser?

A flag game without answer options: a flag appears and you write the country yourself. Some versions go one flag at a time and reward speed; others give you a whole region and a single countdown.

Is there a game like “Whose Flag Is It Anyway?”

Yes. Any one-flag-per-round guesser plays the same way as the TV show: you see a flag, call out the country, and quick answers earn more.

Do I need an account to play a flag quiz?

Usually not. You can play most online flag quizzes as a guest; signing in only matters if you want to keep your scores or join a leaderboard.

Will a quiz accept “Turkey” or “Ivory Coast”?

Good typing quizzes do not care about capital letters or accents and accept the usual alternative names: Turkey for Türkiye, Czech Republic for Czechia, Macedonia for North Macedonia, Cote d’Ivoire for Ivory Coast, Swaziland for Eswatini, Cabo Verde for Cape Verde.

Why do flag quizzes use images instead of flag emoji?

On Windows and in many desktop browsers a flag emoji shows up as two letters, not a flag, so pictures are the only way to make every flag look right.
