How to Host a Trivia Party Game Night

Know your audience. Kids, adults and quiz buffs need different questions. Pick a mix of categories so everyone gets a chance to shine. For a party, a strong base is general knowledge, music, movies and TV, pop culture and a funny round; add the family round if kids are playing. A theme, from outer space to under the sea, adds extra excitement.

A host reading a trivia card while friends at a table write down their guesses

Plan the length. A standard pub quiz has 40 to 60 questions in 4 to 6 rounds of 8 to 10 questions each, and most trivia nights run 60 to 90 minutes, so 40 to 50 questions is the sweet spot. Other hosts plan 5 to 8 rounds of 10, or 50 to 80 questions. Give each round its own category.

Pick a format. Classic rounds go one category at a time, with one point per correct answer and teams allowed to confer, which works well for larger groups. In a lightning round, teams answer as many questions as they can in 60 seconds. Head-to-head puts two players against each other: the first to answer correctly gets the point and the loser rotates out. For a themed night, pick three or four categories that match your group and skip the rest: animals, weird facts and random facts for animal lovers, or food, history and geography for foodies.

Mix up question types. Don’t stick to multiple choice. Add true-or-false, fill-in-the-blank, picture rounds and free-answer questions, or use the guess-the-year and this-or-that rounds above.

Balance the difficulty. Start with a few easy questions to warm everyone up, then add tougher ones. Make questions hard enough to test knowledge but not so hard that players feel defeated, and mix easy and hard questions within each round so every team scores some points. A good question has one clear correct answer and is one most people can take a swing at but few nail exactly. To make a question harder, keep the familiar topic and ask for the lesser-known detail: most people can name the main author of the Declaration of Independence, far fewer can name the committee members who edited it. In history, ask about the cause or the lesser-known figures behind an event, not just the year it started. If someone nails a tricky question, make a big deal of it; if a question stumps everyone, give a hint or turn it into multiple choice on the spot.

Set the mood. Keep it casual and inclusive. Play background music, set out snacks and let people answer in small teams so nobody feels put on the spot. Trivia works as an icebreaker because it’s low pressure: whether someone is a trivia buff or just there for fun, everyone can contribute, and nobody asks about job titles. On a video call, teams can talk answers over in breakout rooms, and a few rounds break up screen fatigue.

Keep score (or don’t). Some groups love a leaderboard; others just want to shout answers and laugh. If you score, track points on a whiteboard or screen, consider a countdown timer and bonus points, and give small prizes to the winning team.

Host tips. Read each question clearly and give teams a set time to answer. Rotate who reads the questions so the host gets to play too. Allow one phone-a-friend per round. Keep a tiebreaker ready, such as a single lightning-round question, and end on a fun, easy question so everyone leaves smiling. Try your quiz on a friend or two first and tweak anything that falls flat. Afterward, share the most surprising facts and ask what to change next time.

Play online. The same quiz works on a video call or with a remote team, where players join from their own devices with a code. In the RoomPlay Quiz, everyone answers on their phone and points are counted automatically; for more ideas for remote groups, see our guide to quiz games for Zoom.

General Knowledge Quiz FAQ

What is a general knowledge quiz?

A quiz on broad, everyday topics like history, geography, science, math, entertainment and sports. Because the questions are easy to mix and answer together, general knowledge quizzes work well for icebreakers, team sessions, classrooms and game nights.

What are good trivia questions for adults?

Mix the categories, such as history, science, geography and pop culture, and mix the difficulty so the strongest players don’t run away with it and casual players still score. The best questions have one clear answer and make people feel smart when they know it; avoid questions that are either too obvious or purely obscure.

How many questions do I need for a quiz night?

A standard pub quiz has 40 to 60 questions, in 4 to 6 rounds of 8 to 10. Most trivia nights run 60 to 90 minutes, so 40 to 50 questions is the sweet spot; some hosts plan 5 to 8 rounds of 10 (50 to 80 questions).

What is a good general knowledge question?

One most people can take a swing at but few nail exactly, like “How many continents are there on Earth?” (seven) or “What’s the capital of Canada?” (Ottawa). It should feel earned without making anyone feel stupid.

What is the difference between easy and hard trivia questions?

Easy questions cover common knowledge you run into every day. Hard questions require specific expertise or use tricky phrasing, so players have to work harder to pull the answer from memory.

Are hard trivia questions good for adults?

Yes. Difficult questions exercise memory and critical thinking and introduce new topics across history, science, literature, geography and pop culture.

How can I get better at trivia?

Practice regularly. Read across different subjects and learn a little every day, so facts stay fresh instead of being forgotten an hour later.

Is there a general knowledge quiz app for groups?

RoomPlay Quiz runs in the browser: the host opens a room, players join from their phones with a link or code, and the game shows the questions and keeps score. It works in the same room or on a video call.
