How to Play Christmas Song Trivia

Friends on a couch by a Christmas tree, one reading a question from a phone while the others sing along

Christmas song trivia tests more than whether you know the chorus. The questions below cover the lyrics people sing wrong, who recorded the songs, and where the carols came from. Tap a question to see the answer, and let the room argue first.

Pick the format that fits your crowd. In a quick round, one person reads and everyone shouts the answer. For a bigger night, split into teams, read each question twice and give about 30 seconds to answer. A good host trick is to hum or sing the song until someone gets there, so the answer arrives with the melody.

Writing your own questions is part of the fun, so add a few about the songs your family sings every year. If you also want movies, food and traditions, our Christmas trivia questions and answers have 400+ more.

Christmas song story with blanks

Write a short story, or read one aloud, with gaps where Christmas song titles belong. Give players a list of titles and have them fill every gap, using each title only once. Several titles can fit a gap, which is part of the puzzle. For a hard version, cover the list and fill the blanks from memory. A list of 20 titles to draw on: “O Christmas Tree,” “Up on the Housetop,” “Blue Christmas,” “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” “Let It Snow,” “Silent Night,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” “Here We Come A-Wassailing,” “What Child Is This?,” “White Christmas,” “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and “Deck the Halls.”

Here is a short example. Fill each gap with a title from the list.

“Snow started falling at dusk, and we told the sky to ___ ___ ___. Mom said it was ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___, so we hung the lights and began to ___ ___ ___. At midnight the house went quiet, and we hummed ___ ___ until we fell asleep.”

  1. Show the filled-in story

Reveal“Snow started falling at dusk, and we told the sky to Let It Snow. Mom said it was It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, so we hung the lights and began to Deck the Halls. At midnight the house went quiet, and we hummed Silent Night until we fell asleep.”

Christmas song charades

Put song titles in a bowl or hat and split into two teams. A player takes a card and acts out the title for their team within a set time, with no speaking, spelling or mouthing words. If the team guesses the song, it scores a point. Teams take turns, a new player acts each time, and the game goes on until the cards run out. The team with the most points wins. Give each turn 90 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on the group, and prepare a few blank cards for songs of your own.

Easy and medium picks: “Sleigh Ride,” “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Do They Know It’s Christmas?,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Carol of the Bells,” “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas,” “Little Saint Nick” and “Blue Christmas.”

Extra tricky picks: “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Mele Kalikimaka,” “Coventry Carol,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Auld Lang Syne,” “In Dulci Jubilo” and “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

Holiday Trivia Questions for Work and Adults

Coworkers in Santa hats singing a carol together at an office party

Song trivia is an easy fit for the office party, since nobody needs to be an expert to join in. These questions work for adults at work, with family or among friends. For a mixed team, keep the round office-safe and skip the religious carols if you are unsure. Use the lyric and artist rounds above, or run them in RoomPlay Quiz so every player answers on a phone. Here are four more office-friendly questions to round it out.

  1. Which Mariah Carey song became a diamond-certified holiday single?

Reveal“All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

  2. Who co-wrote and sang “Here Comes Santa Claus”?

    RevealGene Autry.

  3. In “Jingle Bell Rock,” what are people doing in the frosty air?

RevealDancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square.

  4. Which song includes the words “pa rum pum pum pum”?

    Reveal“The Little Drummer Boy.”

Keep it short. This format suits an office party of 10 to 60 people. For a quick icebreaker, 15 to 20 questions is plenty. A full trivia night runs about an hour with 40 to 60 questions in six rounds. Run the trivia early in the party, then move on to food or another activity while everyone still has energy.

Use teams. Teams of four to six with festive names work well. Read each question twice, give about 30 seconds, collect the answer sheets after each round, score one point per answer and post the scores between rounds. Give double points for a hard round, and save the hardest round for the end.

Play to the crowd. The movie and music rounds get the most laughs, so open with the lyric round to let everyone score early.

Run it remotely. Send each team to a breakout room for each round, have one person type the answers in the chat and keep each round under five minutes.

More ideas are in our guides to holiday party games for work and Christmas party games for office parties.
